Oxymoron: Charity Bandwagon?

You know what I hate? High horses. And I really think people should climb down from theirs on this whole KONY2012 thing!

Admittedly, the organisation (Invisible Children) seems a little shady and people shouldn’t sign anything, or donate any money until they are aware about where that money is going, or what that signature will do. HOWEVER, the organisation is still creating awareness of Joseph Kony, which can only be a good thing.

And no, I don’t think by linking a video to Facebook I ‘m going to save the world. But by linking a video, it might mean someone watches the video. And the more the people watch the video, the more people talk about Kony. And the more people talking about him, makes people more aware of what he does, and the word spreads. The more infamous he gets, the more governments feel pressured into doing something to stop him.

Another argument, is the whole “He’s been doing this for 20-something years. Why are you just doing this now?” Did I know about it 20 years ago? No! And even if it is just now that something is happening; at least something is happening now! If someone came in to stop the Holocaust in the last year, would you say: “It’s been going on for this long. You’re just jumping on the bandwagon by helping.” I don’t really think you can say it’s a bandwagon if it’s a good cause/ideal.

I was never gonna donate money to Invisible Children, nor was I gonna do this whole ‘Seize the Night’ thing. But I’m talking about Kony. I now know about Kony and surely that is what’s important, right?
